Columbia Valley RCMP Report

By Sgt. Darren Kakuno

This past week, December 2 through December 8, Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 36 calls for service. The following are some of the more notable files to which our officers responded.

Impaired charge following two-vehicle crash injuring three

On Monday, December 2 at about 9:45 a.m., Columbia Valley RCMP responded to a two-vehicle incident on Highway 93/95 near Windermere. The driver of a southbound Chevrolet Spark reportedly swerved to avoid a Cadillac Escalade that had pulled onto the highway in front of the Chevrolet. The two vehicles collided resulting in both vehicles going into the ditch.

The driver and passenger of the Chevrolet and the driver and lone occupant of the Cadillac suffered minor injuries.

During the course of the investigation the investigating officer entered into an impaired driving investigation with the driver of the Chevrolet. The driver provided two breath samples which were above the legal limit. As a result, the driver of the Chevrolet was served a 90-day driving prohibition and compelled to attend court at a later date to face impaired driving charges.

The driver of the Cadillac was served a violation ticket for failing to yield on a left turn.

Resident hit by hacked Facebook friend scam

On Friday, December 6, a resident reported falling victim to a Facebook scam. The individual received a message from a Facebook friend who advised her of a federal government grant for individuals over a certain age. The individual was required to transfer $3,500 to a foreign account which was believed to be an application fee. The individual later discovered her friend’s Facebook account had been hacked and she had fallen victim to an online scam. The individual is now working with her bank in an attempt to recover the funds.

Driver unhurt in Westside crash

On Friday, December 6, at about 6:30 p.m., Columbia Valley RCMP responded to a single vehicle motor vehicle incident on Westside Road near Brisco. The driver of a GMC pickup had lost control of the truck and slid into a ditch. The driver of the truck was uninjured and the truck had only minor damage.

Invalid plate check leads to more tickets and vehicle impoundment

On Saturday, December 7 at about 3:30 p.m., an officer was conducting patrols in Canal Flats when a Honda Civic with loud exhaust caught his attention. The officer conducted a check of the license plate and discovered the plate was invalid. The officer conducted a traffic stop with the vehicle and discovered the driver had an expired driver’s license and was not able to produce insurance for the vehicle. The driver was issued a violation ticket for no driver’s license and no insurance. The vehicle was impounded and will need to be inspected before returning to the road.
