East Kootenay FireSmart Program events upcoming

The East Kootenay FireSmart Program is hosting a series of community events to promote emergency preparedness and awareness starting April 26 and reaching into May.

Kicking things off is the Grasmere Community Debris Bin Event starting April 26.

Other upcoming events:

  • Audia Road (Rosen Lake) Community Debris Bin Event – starts April 27.
  • Wilmer Community Debris Bin Event – starts May 3.
  • Edgewater Community Debris Bin Event – starts May 7.
  • Baynes Lake Community Debris Bin Event – starts May 10.

Wildfire Community Preparedness Day Events (see below) – May 4

Emergency Preparedness Fair – Cranbrook at Western Financial Place Parking Lot (1777 2nd St N).  The East Kootenay FireSmart Program, along with 12 other emergency response support services will be set up to provide emergency preparedness information, display emergency response apparatus, play games, and give away prizes. The fair runs 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Ember Stomp – Jaffray Community Hall ((7369 Jaffray Village Loop Rd). The East Kootenay FireSmart Program invites you to join us for our first Ember Stomp, a Wildfire Community Preparedness Day Event, happening in Jaffray from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Over 20 organizations will come together to help you learn how to make your home and community more resilient to wildfire. FireSmart BC will be in attendance with Ember the FireSmart Fox as well as FireSmart Landscape Specialist Carla Hoffman. The RDEK’s Rural Fire & Rescue Service will be showcasing their new Structural Protection Unit Trailer and other wildfire response units. The BC Wildfire Service will be there with an Initial Attack crew, wildland engine, and games for the kids.

Home Hardware – Invermere (9980 Arrow Road). Join the East Kootenay FireSmart Program at Home Hardware from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Residents, contractors, landscapers, and developers are invited to stop by and learn more about the FireSmart Program and how they can make their homes and properties more resilient to wildfire.
