Meant 2B Loved Pet Rescue launches Tina’s Trust

As donations dwindle, rescue is fighting to save lives of two dogs

Meant 2B Loved Pet Rescue Society’s (M2BL) goal is to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome domestic animals in need. However, the rescue is having a challenging time with the ‘rehabilitate’ part these days.

“We all know what the cost of living is like these days,” said M2BL board member Darryl Dux. “People are struggling with paying for essentials let alone have leftover funds to donate. We have really noticed a decline in our donations.”

Currently, M2BL has two seriously ill dogs they are caring for, both of whom require expensive medical care.

“These dogs had been adopted just before we knew they had health issues, so of course we’re going to cover the costs of the treatments. The families of Takhina and Tracker are already in love with them, we have to do what we can to save them,” Dux said.

The rescue was already planning to launch Tina’s Trust, a fund focused on ensuring animals in M2BL’s care who need lifesaving treatment are not denied because of costs.

Named for Tina, a dog taken in by M2BL in late 2023 whowas emaciated and close to death. Emergency surgery eventually found that she had swallowed a corn cob that was lodged in her intestine; a situation that would have been a death sentence without the surgery. Now Tina is healthy, happy, and living her best life at her new forever home.

“We want more happy stories like Tina’s but to do so requires a significant financial commitment. Our hope is we can build Tina’s Trust over time so that we don’t have to hesitate at all when an animal needs lifesaving care, we’ll know there is a fund to cover some or all of the expenses,” Dux added.

Adding another significant blow to the rescue’s funds is a lack of Cranbrook volunteers coming forward to gather donated cans, bottles, and milk containers and/or sort them in bags in preparation for going to the depot.

“The past couple of years we’ve had an amazing volunteer overseeing the bottle collection, sorting, and returning process,” Dux said. “He is now taking his well-deserved retirement but we haven’t had any success in finding one or more people to take over his role.”

In addition to the two ill dogs, M2BL is also entering prime TNR (trap, neuter, release) season. In previous years, the rescue has been able to access vouchers to cover the cost of spaying or neutering the feral cats but it is uncertain whether that resource will be available to them this year.

“The uncertainty around the vouchers is a definite concern,” Dux said. “Almost $20,000 in spay/neuter costs were covered by them in 2023 so that is a huge loss for us this year if we’re unable to access them.”

Meant 2B Loved does not receive any external funding. They rely on donations and recycling of bottles, cans, and milk containers as their primary sources of funding. With donations slowing and no one to help with the recycling, it is becoming more of a challenge for the rescue to cover the costs of day-to-day operations let alone lifesaving medical interventions and over $20,000 in spay and neuter costs.

“We know this is a tough time for individual donors but if any businesses or organizations would like to donate to Tina’s Trust or to our TNR Fund, it would be amazing,” Dux said.

Meant 2B Loved will also be holding a Bake Sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 11 at Home Hardware in Cranbrook with proceeds going to Tina’s Trust.
