Be wary of door-to-door scammers

On May 1, Elk Valley Regional RCMP was advised by several residents of Fernie that there were door-to-door salespersons going through our local communities having aggressive sales tactics, with some people believing the sales involved may be fraudulent in nature.

Elk Valley RCMP wish to advise our citizens that you should never open your door to strangers with or without credentials and that if you have questions related to a charity or business going door-to-door, to reach out to the charity directly or the Better Business Bureau to check their validity prior to making any donation or contractual agreement.

Any resident experiencing an aggressive salesperson or otherwise can contact your local RCMP to help you with those individual(s).

Normally, charities and most door-to-door businesses do call into the local RCMP or your local district/city office to advise they are in the area in case of calls from concerned homeowners to ensure their legitimacy.

Anyone with further questions can reach out to the Elk Valley Regional RCMP at 250-425-6233 in Sparwood or 250-4253-4404 in Fernie during normal business hours or 24/7 via those same phone lines or 911 (in an emergency) in the event they need immediate Police assistance.

S/Sgt. Svend Nielsen,

Elk Valley Regional RCMP Detachment commander
