Hosmer Fire responds as grass fire gets away

Members of the Hosmer Fire Department responded to a grass fire near the Bridge in Hosmer this afternoon.

“This started as a small grass fire, but grew quickly in the windy conditions and moved into the surrounding timber, ” said Elk Valley & South Country Rural Fire and Rescue Chief Michael Hockley. “Our team did an excellent job of actioning the fire quickly and getting it extinguished.”

Six firefighters and four pieces of apparatus responded and it has now been turned over to the BC Wildfire Service.
“At this time of year, fires can easily get into the dead, dry grass from the fall and expand quickly and unpredictably,” added Hockley.
“We cannot stress enough how important it is to ensure you use extreme caution when doing outdoor burning and choose to burn in safe conditions when the forecast is calling for calm winds throughout the burning period. Further, you must have a water source and tools on hand no matter how small the fire is.”
This is the third grassfire in just over two weeks that the Regional District of East Kootenay’s Fire Services crews have responded to in the region.
