Fairmont Creek Debris Flow Mitigation Engineering Contract awarded
The Engineering Contract for Phases two and three of the Fairmont Creek Debris Flow Mitigation Project was July 8 awarded to Northwest Hydraulic Consultants. The detailed engineering work will begin shortly and the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) hopes to tender the construction contract by the end of this year.
Community Works Fund Grant approved for Wasa Lions outdoor kitchen project
A Community Works Fund grant in the amount of $6,113 has been approved for the Wasa Lions Outdoor Kitchen Project. The funds will be used to install a cement floor.
Vote to be held on proposed Mosquito Control Service
Earlier this year, the RDEK held an information meeting to discuss a proposed Mosquito Control Service for the Bull River and Mayook areas. Before the proposed service can proceed, it requires the approval of the electors within the proposed Service Area. The RDEK Board has now given three readings to the Service Establishment Bylaw, and has approved holding a vote for the community assent process. The vote will be held this fall and details will be provided to the community within the next few weeks.
Board identifies several topics for discussion at upcoming Union of BC Municipalities convention
The regional board will request the following meetings during the 2016 Union of BC Municipalities Convention in Victoria:
– Update on Agricultural Land Reserve Boundary Review process (meeting with the Agricultural Land Commission);
– Windermere Water / PARR Utilities contribution in aid of construction charge increase (meeting with Comptroller of Water Rights);
– Columbia Lake Provincial Park upgrade status (meeting with Minister of Environment);
– Appointment of East Kootenay member on Managed Forest Council (meeting with Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations);
– Public consultation process for land tenure applications (meeting with Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations);
– Condition of Highway 95 in the Columbia Valley (meeting with Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure);
– Left turn lanes on Highway 3 at Bate Avenue and Burton Lake Road (meeting with Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure);
– Elko Dam upgrade status (meeting with Minister of Energy and Mines);
The Convention will be held September 26-30.
Request for public meeting
The regional board will send a letter to the Comptroller of Water Rights requesting a public meeting be held in Fairmont Hot Springs regarding the proposed rate increase for Fairmont Hot Springs Utility.
Letter of support for Broadband Corporation application
A letter of support will be provided to the Columbia Basin Broadband Corporation for its application to the province to lease a portion of the Elko Fire Hall property for the purpose of constructing a telecommunications tower.
In support of improved connectivity
The Columbia Basin Broadband Corporation will be allowed to use the old Knowledge Network tower, to construct a telecom shelter and fence, and to install relevant equipment on the Wasa recreation property in order to extend its fibre optic network to address poor connectivity in the region. RDEK staff will negotiate an agreement for use.
Discretionary Grants-in-Aid (DGIA)
The Cranbrook Community Forest Society Gateway Project will receive $1,500 from the Electoral Area C DGIA account. Through the project, informational kiosks will be installed at an upgraded trailhead at the College of the Rockies.
Summit Community Services Society will receive $2,000 from the Electoral Area C DGIA account and $1,500 from the Electoral Area E DGIA account for its Men’s Counselling Program.
The Community Connections Society of Southeast BC will receive $1,000 from the Electoral Area C DGIA account for the Cranbrook Food Action Committee Farm to Fork Dinner.
All Saints Anglican Church will receive $1,500 from the Electoral Area C DGIA account and $1,500 from the Electoral Area E DGIA account to assist with its integration efforts for sponsored refugee families arriving in the community.
The Columbia Basin Environmental Education Network will receive a total of $4,000 for its Wild Voices for Kids Program. The funding will be from the following DGIA accounts: Area B ($1,000), Area C ($1,000), Area E ($500), Area F ($1,000), Area G ($500).
