Chips in the dip when truck crashes into creek
Elk Valley RCMP responded to single vehicle collision on Highway 3 near Fernie this past Sunday, with minor injuries to the driver and passenger.
On Sunday September 18, at approximately 6 a.m., Elk Valley RCMP responded to a collision involving tractor-trailer truck that went off road right and landed in the Little Fairy Creek in Fernie. No other vehicles were involved.
There were two occupants in the tractor-trailer, a male driver in his 30s and a male passenger also in his 30s both from Calgary, Alberta.
“Both occupants were taken to the hospital for minor non-life threatening injuries. The truck was transporting potato chips at the time, resulting in the chips getting dipped,” stated Sgt. Will Thien of Elk Valley RCMP.
The driver told police that he drove off the road when avoiding an object that flashed in front of his tractor before crashing into the creek. The tractor-trailer landed between the Little Fairy Creek Bridge (Hwy 3) and the newly built pedestrian bridge. There was no damage to the bridges other than a couple of concrete barriers.
The Ministry of Environment was contacted due to the tractor-trailer landing in a creek and Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE) was contacted due to it being a commercial vehicle.
