Fernie Lions Club thanks volunteers
By S.L. Furedi
Putting on a large-scale event like the annual Demolition Derby requires a lot of volunteers. The Fernie Lions Club hosted a Volunteer Appreciation Dinner, Feb. 25, to let those volunteers know how much they appreciate all that help.
The annual dinner, held at the Fernie Legion Hall, was attended by almost 70 Lions members, volunteers and invited dignitaries, including City of Fernie Mayor Mary Guiliano, who said grace and also thanked the volunteers for all they do.
Volunteers included representatives from Mitchell Excavating, Shoesmith Construction and Cameron Enterprises, among others, who all put in many hours helping the club run the derby.
Lion Rick Ganter, one of the dinner organizers said, “We’re a relatively small club. There’s no way we could manage to put on a derby without every one of those volunteers, from the kitchen staff and errand runners, to the guys that run the loaders. It takes a couple of months of work parties to get things ready and a dinner like this is a small way of saying thanks.”
