East Kootenay Community Credit Union (EKC) is proud to be hosting, sponsoring and participating in a number of exciting community events taking place this May and June in Cranbrook and the Elk Valley.

On Friday, May 12, EKC’s Cranbrook branch held a sign-up for the Kootenay Kids’ Fondo, a fun cycling experience for ages six to 13. EKC is a proud sponsor of the event, which takes place on May 28, at St. Eugene Golf Resort and Casino. For more information.

EKC is also funding five youth, aged 14 to 16, to attend the YES leadership camp this summer at Lake Cowichan. The YES leadership camp is a summer camp that provides weeklong leadership retreats for B.C. youth. Skills training is offered in the areas of self-awareness, co-operation, communication, global awareness, environmental sustainability and leadership. Applications for 2017 are now available and can be picked up at EKC or downloaded from the website. Application deadline is June 9.

“We are committed to supporting and encouraging children and youth in our communities and believe in providing them access to opportunities that nurture skills, build confidence, support dreams, and teach respect, kindness and community-involvement,” said Mindy Atti, Cranbrook Branch Manager, EKC. “In addition to our many youth-focused annual sponsorships and events, the EKC gives out more than $12,000 in student awards every June to Cranbrook and Elk Valley students to support their post- secondary ambitions. This year’s recipients will be announced by EKC after schools have presented the financial awards to the outstanding students.”

EKC staff and board are looking forward to participating in several community events this spring.

EKC Sparwood branch is celebrating its fifth year in Sparwood at Coal Miners Days, June 8 to 11. EKC will be celebrating Elkford Wild Cat Days June 30 – July 2.

Sam Steele Days festivities, where EKC will host the Chalk Art Competition at the Sam Steele Fairgrounds Saturday, June 17. Cranbrook Women’s Resource Centre will be leading a team for the ‘Walk a Mile in Her Shoes’ campaign again.

The walk will take place at the Sam Steele Parade on June 17. Join EKC and help them defend their Red Shoe Award for the past two years as the biggest team fundraiser. To join EKC’s team please contact Devin in the Cranbrook branch.

“Last year EKC staff, management and the Board of directors donated $100,000 to more than 60 organizations and gave numerous volunteer hours to 55 different groups,” said Eric Johnstone, Regional Branch Manager, Elk Valley, EKC. “We are proud to take an active role in our local communities and are deeply invested in their success. EKC just celebrated its fifth anniversary at its Sparwood Branch, and we look forward to serving the people in Sparwood, as well as across the Elk Valley, for generations to come.”
