Legion Branch 24 helps community
The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 24 Cranbrook continued its philanthropic mission with more donations to the community Friday, January 12.
The Cranbrook Food Bank was presented with a cheque for $1,250 at a ceremony in front of a full Legion lounge last Friday.
Gerry Oviatt, Cranbrook Food Bank manager, addressed the Legion membership with words of thanks on behalf of those needing a hand up within our community. “This is a very timely donation as we come off the big Christmas push and donations tend to drop off in January. The need is year-round and the Legion has been a terrific community partner year in and year out. Thank you so much.”
The second donation of the evening continued the same theme of ensuring everyone in Cranbrook has food and is not going hungry. Ways and Means Committee Chair Joanne Hebert presented Meghan Driver from Parkland Middle School and Linda Butz from Steeples Elementary School, with a cheque for $2,450 for the Breakfast for Learning Program.
The Breakfast for Learning Program’s motto is “Feeding Hungry Minds Throughout the Day.”
Speaking on behalf of the program Meghan Driver thanked the Legion and spoke passionately about the program. “We believe that children deserve the very best chance of success in life, and the way that we help is by ensuring that they are well nourished and ready to learn throughout the school day. I want to thank the Legion for the kind and generous support.”
The Royal Canadian Legion advocates for the care and benefits for all who served Canada. The Legion has a strong community mandate and donates thousands of dollars each year to various organization in Cranbrook in a goal to make our community stronger and more sustainable.
The Cranbrook Legion branch is located in the basement of the Heritage Inn and is open to members and guests from 2 p.m. daily. Saturdays are an exciting time at the branch with meat draws, dart shoots, 50/50 draws and terrific camaraderie in a warm comfortable atmosphere.
