Moyie tower replacement to get second hearing
A second public hearing is going to be held regarding the replacement of a wireless communication facility in Moyie.
Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Electoral Area C Director and board chair Rob Gay Feb. 9 asked the board to reconsider Bylaw No. 2816 – Moyie & Area Land Use Amendment Bylaw, citing more information received after the January meeting.
On Jan. 10, the board defeated third reading of the bylaw at the behest of Director Gay, citing a “groundswell of public concern about microwaves and so on.”
A month later, again citing another groundswell of community interest in favour of the communication tower, which could be located in the southwest edge of the community, off Half Moon Avenue, Gay asked the board to reconsider and received unanimous support in bringing the bylaw back into the regional books.
Gay told board members he had received more than 70 emails, “many saying I don’t know too much.”
The proposed tower replacement will cost about $300,000, with half that cost covered by the federal government. The project would improve wireless Internet access in the Moyie area.
District of Elkford Mayor and RDEK board director Dean McKerracher told Gay prior to the board vote, “I think you are a great politician, admitting you’re wrong. Don (US President Trump) would never do that!”
The public hearing is being held Tuesday, March 6 at 7 p.m. at the Moyie Community Hall, 9322 Tavistock Street.
