Obituary for Debra Lynn BERNARDO-GARDNER

Debra Lynn BERNARDO-GARDNER

January 12, 1955 – March 21, 2018

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Debra Bernardo Gardner at the Elk Valley Hospital at 63 years of age.

Debra was born January 12, 1955 in Fernie, B.C. to parents Anne and Alfeo Bernardo. After graduation from Sparwood Secondary Debra went to University to obtain her teaching degree. Debbie was a very well liked teacher, both with students and parents alike. She taught school in Fruitvale, Coquitlam and Kelowna School Districts.

Debbie was beautiful both inside and out and had many friends. She was very fun-loving, outgoing, caring, and vivacious with an infectious smile that lit up a room. She loved to travel – especially trips to Cabo San Lucas, and in earlier years trips with our family and Mom and Dad to Reno. Fun times. Debbie enjoyed boating and golfing where she was a member of the Kelowna Golf and Country Club.

Debra is predeceased by her parents, Anne and Alfeo Bernardo, and many relatives. She is survived by her sister, Maureen (Robert) Martin of Chilliwack, her niece Kristy Rogge of Maple Ridge, nephew Kent (Jana) Martin of Calgary, and their families as well as Aunty Emma Chala and numerous cousins.

Our family would like to thank Dr. Higgins and the Sparwood Health Centre, the Sparwood Home Support and Nurses as well as the very caring staff at the Elk Valley Hospital. A very special thank you to Debbie’s dear friends and relatives, especially Paolina Krall, who visited and cared for her in so many ways, so that as she wished, she could live at home for as long as possible. Father David thank you for your visits, blessings and prayers. You made this journey for Debbie one filled with love and peace.

Debbie loved animals, so if friends and family desire, a donation to your local SPCA or Animal Shelter or charity of your choice may be made in memory of Debbie.

“In the end it’s not years in your life that counts, it’s the life in your years.” Abraham Lincoln
As Deb always said, “I did it my way.” You will be missed. May you rest in peace!
