55+ Games torch lighting Sunday

In celebration of the approaching Kimberley/Cranbrook 2018 55+ BC Games, the host society is pleased to invite the public to the torch lighting on Sunday, June 17 at noon at Balement Park.

Those taking in the Sam Steele Days parade on Saturday morning will get an early glimpse of the torches.

Sue Selby and Tootie Gripich, the senior members of the Abreast in the Rockies Dragon Boat Team, are being honoured as torch bearers.

Selby and Gripich will be in the team’s dragon boat throughout the parade, giving spectators a good look at the torches.

The program will begin on Sunday at noon on the stage in Balment Park, with emcee Kaytee Wheaton guiding the presentation.

Out-of-town VIPs in attendance include Cindy Simpson, president of the BC Seniors Games Society, Bob Ewashen, director of Zone 7, Ron Corcoran, Zone 7 chair, Jenelle Hynes with Pacific Coastal Airlines, a provincial sponsor, and Eve Normandin, with Rio Tinto Group, a provincial sponsor.

The Kimberley/Cranbrook 2018 55+ BC Games will take place Sept. 11-15, with sports being held in venues throughout Cranbrook and Kimberley.

Over 2,800 participants are expected to compete in 23 sports.
