Eight cows killed in Elko tunnel crash
On September 14, a tractor-trailer hauling about 64 live cattle to Alberta was involved in a motor vehicle accident when the right side of the trailer made contact with the rock tunnel on Highway 3 east of Elko.
There was significant damage to the trailer and about 13 cows were dislodged from the trailer. Rock debris was evident on the highway.
Unfortunately, eight cows had to be destroyed due to their injuries. Another 51 cows were rounded up and continued on their way to Alberta. Five wandered off but were later accounted for. There were no personal injuries or any other motor vehicles involved in this accident.
Elk Valley RCMP would like to thank the following agencies for their assistance: Emergency Veterinarian service; Elko Fire Department, Emergency Health Services; the Canadian Food Inspection Agency; Highway Departments; and Commercial Vehicle Safety Enforcement (CVSE), stated Cst. Debra Katerenchuk of Elk Valley RCMP.
