Elk Valley RCMP Report

Elk Valley RCMP responded to 173 calls for service in the Elk Valley between February 15 and 28.
Police were kept busy with the some following calls: 17 motor vehicle collisions; two assaults; seven causing a disturbance; five mischief; 13 suspicious person/vehicle/occurrence; three thefts (bicycle, snow bike, and shoplifting); two stranded snowmobilers (assist to SAR); three breach/bail violations.
RCMP wrote 44 motor vehicle infraction tickets. Of note, one ticket was written under the Cannabis Control and Licensing Act for consumption of marijuana while operating a motor vehicle. The fine for this offence was $230.
Six impaired drivers were taken off the streets by police and received either a 30 day or 90 Immediate Roadside Prohibition (IRP).
Wild Cat Days Poker Rally
Constables Emma Dyer and Milo Melwood took to the snowmobile trails during the Wild Cat Poker Rally on Saturday, February 16.
The patrols focused on rider safety; registration and regulations; and impaired driving enforcement. It was an excellent turn out with approximately 28 sledders relishing in this great winter social ride.
Constables Dyer and Melwood enjoyed speaking with all participants and were happy to report no alcohol or drug issues. Overall, it was a fun event with friendly people.
Time was also taken for a quick photo moment of Cst. Dyer by Cst. Melwod on the breath taking trails coming down from the cabin at Crossing Creek. (Pictured above)
Griz Days
Fernie’s Griz Days Mascot is seen here enjoying a photo opportunity with Cst. Jason Hydamacka, of the East Kootney Traffic Services RCMP. Cst. Hydamacka, along with Elk Valley RCMP Members, were in attendance during the festival by enhancing traffic safety to everyone and to keeping an eye out for impaired drivers.
A different kind of horsepower
Cst. Katerenchuk took a short break from her vehicle patrols while in the downtown area of Fernie and met with two local women who were riding their horses down main street in preparation for Griz Days. Cst. Katerenchuk could not resist the temptation to take one of the horses for short stroll along 1nd Ave.
Sparwood Secondary School – damage to locked gate
It appeared person(s) wanted into the school yard in a bad way by driving their truck through the big yellow locked gate around March 4. The truck left behind pieces of grill headlights on the ground. This truck would have some misplaced yellow paint transfer and visible front-end damage.
