RDEK supports Elko aggregate pit extension
Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) board of directors March 8 agreed to support an application before the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development to extend the size and life of an aggregate pit in Elko.
Considering a Natural Resource Operations Referral, the board agreed to support Elko Hilltop Services Ltd.’s application for an amendment to increase the operating area and term for its existing Licence of Occupation for an aggregate extraction operation in Elko.
The amendment seeks to increase the total area of the aggregate pit from 2.3 hectares to 3.6 ha and to increase the operating term from 10 years to 15 years.
“While a large part of the expansion is identified as Class 1 Ungulate Winter Range staff do not believe the proposal will have a measurable negative impact on the wildlife in the area,” stated a report to the board by Krista Gilbert, RDEK planning technician.
Electoral Area Director Mike Sosnowski recused from the meeting for potential conflict of interest prior to the otherwise unanimous board vote.
