Dr. Roy McLEAN

JANUARY 18, 1943 ~ MARCH 4, 2019 (AGE 76)

Roy was born in Franz, Ontario on January 18, 1943 and was the youngest of six children. He spent most of his childhood growing up in Wawa, Ontario and then attended the University of Ottawa to pursue his career in education. He met his wife, Charlotte, at a university dance and married in 1971. After finishing university, Roy took his first job as a teacher in Calgary, Alberta. He soon moved with Charlotte to Victoria, BC, where his first son, Spencer, was born in 1977. After taking a position in Grand Forks, BC as a Vice-Principal, Roy settled in Fernie, BC in 1980 as the Principal of Fernie Secondary School. His second son, Brendan, was born in 1980 in Fernie. Roy remained in Fernie until his passing, raising his family and pursuing his career in education, retiring in 2003 as the Superintendent of School District 5 and culminating in 2009 when he received his Doctorate of Education from the University of Calgary. Roy passed away peacefully at home on March 4, 2019.

Roy was active in sports and community his whole life. He was an avid hockey player, nicknamed “Gunner” for his goal-scoring prowess, spent countless hours on the ski hill with his family, and wore out numerous sets of shoes on the James White tennis courts. He was a member of the 3300 Club and was President of the 1987 BC Winter Games. He was known for his laugh, kindness, gentle-nature and integrity.

Roy is survived by his wife Charlotte and their son Brendan (Kim); daughter-in-law Christina Frangou; his grandchildren, Noel, Owen and Clark; sister Darlene Govett; his brother Gerald and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Lester and Muriel; son Spencer and brothers Jack, Don and Ray.
