Sparwood Council Facts

The following is a synopsis of what occurred during the Dec. 3 District of Sparwood council meeting.

DELEGATIONS

RCMP

Elk Valley RCMP Detachment Staff Sgt. Jeff Harrold presented the third quarter crime statistics on offences responded to by detachment officers. The report reflected a decrease of 52 calls for service over the same period in 2018.

Livability Study

Cassandra Cagier, of Intelligent Futures, presented the Sparwood Livability Study (SLS) for council’s endorsement. The SLS was developed to define, understand and measure elements of our community and mining, through Teck’s Baldy Ridge Extension (BRE) and other developments that can have positive or negative impacts on our quality of life. Priorities identified by the Socio-Community and Economic Effects Advisory Committee for implementation in 2020, and endorsed by council, included air quality, dust/dirt, health care access – service hours, housing availability, and economic diversification.

BUSINESS

CBT Community Wildfire Education Grant

Council authorized the submission of a Community Wildfire Education grant application to the Columbia Basin Trust for funding of up to $25,000 to raise awareness and deliver educational programs about actions property owners and the District of Sparwood can take to mitigate the impacts of community wildfires. Council also approved an operating budget allocation of up to $25,000 in matching funds for this initiative.

Upper Elk Valley Fire Protection Services

Council authorized the District of Sparwood to enter into an agreement with the Regional District of East Kootenay to provide fire protection services to the Upper Elk Valley Fire Protection Service area for a term of five years commencing January 1, 2020.

Community Promotion and Float Policy

Council adopted the Community Promotion and Float Policy to replace the Float – Attendance at Parades Policy which was repealed at that meeting. The new policy defines the area that the District of Sparwood’s float may go, who can use the float and reimbursement for travel expenses.
