Notes from City Hall
The next City of Kimberley Regular Meeting of Council will be held Monday, February 24 at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers upstairs at City Hall. The public is invited to attend.
Utility Payment Due Date
The due date for the first quarter utility bill of 2020 is Tuesday, March 10. Payments can be made by cash, cheque, debit card or online with most financial institutions.
Snow Hauling
Please give city staff room to operate during snow removal. In areas where snow piles are to be hauled away, the City will post temporary “No Parking” signs the afternoon before snow hauling commences. Vehicles will be towed if they do not comply with the signage. City crews are working as quickly as possible to clear the streets, following the City’s Snow and Ice Management Plan. View the entire plan here.
Clearing Snow and Ice
Icy sidewalks can be a hazard for everyone including seniors, children, mail carriers, meter readers, firefighters, and paramedics. As the weather warms up and then freezes again, water from melting snow can cause slippery sections on sidewalks. Property owners are responsible for clearing sidewalks outside their premises. Here are a few tips to help maintain your sidewalks, walkways and driveways:
- Warm weather during the day can make ice soft, so it’s easier to chip or shovel away.
- Spread sand or gravel on icy patches to make your sidewalk safer for pedestrians. Spreading sand on a sidewalk before ice forms can also make future ice easier to remove.
- Microwaving sand in a microwave-safe container and spreading it while it is still warm will make the sand embed itself into the ice, creating a gritty top layer.
- De-icing products are available at local retailers and can be helpful with ice control.
- Pile snow in a place where it will not run across your sidewalk when it melts and aim your downspouts away from areas where people walk.
- Please remember that clearing snow and ice from your sidewalk or driveway onto a city street or sidewalk is not permitted. Putting snow out onto the city street or sidewalk can become a public safety concern.
Help Keep Catch Basins Clear
Did you know that the City of Kimberley has over 700 Catch Basins? The city is asking residents to help keep your neighbourhood catch basins clear of snow and ice. This will help to improve the storm water systems ability to collect melting water and rain and reduce the possibility of flooding. Please report any blocked catch basins that you are unable to locate or manage yourself to the Operations Department at 250-427-9660 or [email protected].
On Wednesday, February 26, East Kootenay Royal LePAGE will sponsor a FREE family Swim from 6 to 7 p.m. Please remember that all those under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
Spring Break at the Aquatic Centre
The Aquatic Centre is offering daily adventure camps for youth aged five to 11 during the weeks of March 16 – 20 and March 23– 27.
