Firefighters grateful for assistance
The City of Cranbrook was shaken the afternoon of Sept. 1 when a massive two-building fire pushed by 30 plus km/h winds threatened to keep feeding on nearby buildings.
Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services had all hands on during the blaze, which began in the old Royal Canadian Legion building and spread to the May May Restaurant. Off duty firefighters raced to the scene to join on duty members, along with a host of other emergency agencies and the local firefighters Sept. 2 released a statement of gratitude for the help.
“Our local would like to give a huge shout out to some groups and individuals that went above and beyond during the Cranbrook St. fire on Tuesday. Our local RCMP and out of town members (Kimberley RCMP) who did their best to secure an area that included a major four-lane highway going directly through it. Well done and thank you for keeping the area clear,” stated Cranbrook Professional Fire Fighters Local 1253 on social media.
“BCEHS members who ran rotating medical checks and assisted our members as we continued to work the fires. Your care and presence was greatly appreciated. Fortunately, nobody needed emergent medical care, but it is always reassuring to know that you are by our side.
“To the Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE) members who manned intersections and barricaded zones, ensuring that only authorized vehicles were able to quickly enter the scene. We sincerely appreciated your quick actions.
“To Fortis and BC Hydro, for promptly securing both the gas and power in order to make things safer for all. Your assistance is invaluable.
“To the City of Cranbrook Public Works Department members who provided assistance, from setting up barricades to providing and operating heavy equipment (Remi you’re the best!)
“To the city garage (Jordan), who ensured that all of our apparatus were firing on all cylinders.
“And finally to the folks of Cranbrook for your many offers of support and nourishment, (Trevor- Boston Pizza). It was greatly appreciated as the day was long. Also, the individuals who used garden hoses and sprinklers and whatever means they had available to protect their property and their neighbours’ property. You made a difference and our job easier,” the local stated.
“We live in a great community that we are so proud to serve and protect. Thank you Cranbrook!”
