The first ever Virtual Snow Science Workshop (VSSW) will be live-streamed from Fernie October 4-6.

This online conference will have an audience of more than 500 delegates from alpine nations around the world, logging on to hear the latest in snow and avalanche safety.

Fernie had been gearing up to host the 22nd International Snow Science Workshop (ISSW) this October. However, due to the many uncertainties presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, the conference was postponed to October 2021.

The ISSW is a biennial conference that alternates between Canada, USA and Europe, bringing together researchers and practitioners from around the world to facilitate the interdisciplinary exchange of ideas and experiences.

“Avalanches and backcountry use don’t stop just because of COVID-19,” noted Steve Kuijt, chair of the 2021 ISSW committee. “It is important we continue to move forward with initiatives for the industry, such as this online event, to keep the knowledge moving forward and maintain safety worldwide.”

VSSW 2020 will feature 14 guest speakers, sharing and interpreting their research and leading-edge practices. Two panel discussions will provide interactive conversations focusing on the avalanche safety practices of professional snowmobilers, and mentorship in the avalanche industry.

There are also 50 posters, covering a wide range of cutting-edge ideas and topics.

All proceeds from the VSSW event will go towards the ISSW 2021 conference and the Elk Valley Snow and Avalanche Society (EVSAW) for avalanche education in the Elk Valley.
