Adopt A Creek program at work

Grade 3 students at Highlands Elementary School took part in the Adopt A Creek program with Columbia Outdoor School in May at Idlewild Lake.

The program is offered at five schools near Joseph Creek – Highlands, St. Mary’s Catholic School, ʔaq̓amnik̓ Elementary, Steeples Elementary, and Laurie Middle School – and gives students the opportunity to “adopt” a section of Joseph Creek to take care of over the year.

Students learn about invasive species, water quality, fish health and habitat, riparian value, and biodiversity.

Columbia Outdoor School received a $2,000 community grant from BC Hydro in 2020 to develop the program.

BC Hydro provides grants for projects focused on building the workforce of tomorrow, safety education, and developing smart energy ideas.

Local programs are eligible for grants of up to $2,000; and organizations that deliver a program in multiple communities can apply for funding up to $10,000. In 2020, BC Hydro provided almost $42,000 to East Kootenay organizations.
