The Cranbrook Community Forest Society, in partnership with the Kootenay Orienteering Club and the East Kootenay Backcountry Horsemen, are inviting the public to assist in the removal of barbed wire – a couple of sections of collapsed rangeland fencing.

This fencing poses a serious hazard to wildlife and recreational users. There is up to 2.5-km of three strand fencing that will be spooled up into manageable rolls for removal and recycling. If necessary, a second work party will be completed in the Fall to complete this project.

When: 8 a.m. to Noon, Sunday, June 27 followed by hotdogs and drinks.

Where: Padawan Trailhead (near the Ft. Steele/Fernie interchange.)

What to bring: Sturdy boots, long pants, work gloves, sunhat and water bottle

Helpful tools: wire side cutter, claw hammer, small bucket for collecting staples (or tool belt with pouches).

Please use the pullout after the Ft. Steele/Fernie interchange (Ft. Steele exit) to make a safe turn across the traffic to make the turn into the new trail head. We will be meeting about 100m from the highway turnoff.

A briefing will be provided at 8:15 a.m. to explain the objective and methods to be used to dismantle the fence. All family members are welcome to join in.
