Students seek to inspire and uplift the community
The Mount Baker Interact Leadership students have designed something extraordinary to help bring peace into our community and are creating a space of reflection at Idlewild Park.
Since January, the students have been working to create a peace pole and have made tremendous progress.
You may be asking, “What is a peace pole and why do we need one?” It is an internationally recognized symbol of a common wish for a world of peace, unity, and collectiveness.
The past couple of years have been hard on many and have separated us from being one whole community. Planting the peace pole is a way of bringing people together to inspire, awaken, and uplift the community.
The peace pole is much more than a simple pole in the ground. The students have designed a bronze sculpture of a tree composed of strong swirling branches that come together as a heart on the top. The branches will be decorated with the words, “May peace prevail on Earth,” in several different languages representing different cultures in our area.
The pole will be planted at the northeast end of Idlewild Lake where the Rotary Ridge Trail and the Lake Loop Trail meet, which symbolizes bringing together cultures from around the world.
It also provides a beautiful backdrop of the lake.
There will be a Dedication Ceremony for Peace on Friday, June 17 at 1 p.m. at Idlewild Park.
Everyone is welcome to attend and see the sculpture and the various activities that will be happening: musical performances, planting shrubberies, and burying a time capsule. We hope to see many people attend!
