City of Cranbrook council Nov. 21 approved a request for an application to the Community Resiliency Investment Program for a grant to continue with wildfire interface treatment work and FireSmart activities.

The Community Resiliency Investment (CRI) Program is intended to reduce the risk and impact of wildfire on communities throughout B.C.; with financial support for community priority fuel management activities on provincial Crown land.

The program was launched in 2018 and more than 120 First Nations and local governments have received funding.

“The 2023 program is structured to fund FireSmart activities in all eligible communities throughout B.C. Funding is scaled to offer communities with lower risk of wildfire to apply for up to $100,000 and applicants with a demonstrated higher risk of wildfire to apply for up to $200,000 per year. If successful, the grant funding will be used for wildfire interface treatment work and FireSmart activities,” outlined the request report to council from Scott Driver, Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services Chief.
