Overnight warming centres starting Tuesday afternoon

Due to the extreme cold forecast for the next few nights, the First Baptist Church, at 334-14th Avenue South, has graciously offered space for an overnight warming centre opening today from 4 p.m. to 9:30 a.m.

The warming centre is to remain open through until Friday morning (December 23).

This space is available above and beyond the existing shelter located at the Travelodge, operated by BC Housing, which also provides a place for those in need to get out of the cold.

The Provincial Emergency Program through the City of Cranbrook provides supports to third-party groups and non-profit organizations in order to provide warming shelters for those in need.

Another emergency temporary shelter is being opened at the Alliance Church (1200 Kootenay St N) from 7 p.m. to 9 a.m. between Dec. 20 and 23. There are separate sleeping and bathroom quarters for men and women; locked storage for personal belongings; warm drinks and snacks.

The church is Looking for donations of tea, coffee, muffins, snacks, water, individual meals for morning, volunteers for driving or supervision and cleaning. Call 250-417-7655 or drop by the church.
