FireSmart community debris bin event to be held in Wilmer

Residents in Wilmer will be working to maintain their FireSmart Neighbourhood National Recognition status at the end of this month with support from the East Kootenay FireSmart Program.

“The community will be participating in the Debris Bin Program, which allows for residents to drop off yard waste at centrally located bins for a period of two weeks,” said Local FireSmart Representative Thomas Dobbin.

“This bin gives residents a chance to dispose of yard waste without having to transport it out of the community. This is an excellent way to increase accessibility to participate in FireSmart activities and continue to increase the community’s wildfire resilience.”

The green bin will be in place from April 29 – May 14, to allow residents time to drop off their yard waste.

It will be located on the north end of the Wilmer Community Hall (pictured) on Park Street. Materials accepted include grass, needles, leaves, brush, and tree limbs measuring under eight inches in diameter. Items not accepted include any construction materials, treated wood, or root balls.

There is no cost to drop off yard waste, but organizers do ask that residents track their work hours, as it is an important component of maintaining Wilmer’s national recognition as a FireSmart Community.
