Residential tax increase of 5.87% coming in Cranbrook

City of Cranbrook residential taxpayers can anticipate a 5.87% tax increase for 2023.

City of Cranbrook council April 17 received information presented by city staff, and directed administration to bring back a tax rate bylaw for three readings at the May 1 regular meeting resulting in a general municipal tax burden distribution of roughly 63% to the residential property class and 34% to the business property class resulting in a general municipal tax increase to the residential class of 5.87%.

The City of Cranbrook 2023 tax levy of $32,789,788 represents a 5.87% increase over 2022.

On a typical home in Cranbrook, valued at $446,000, that results in an annual tax increase of $139 or $11.58 per month.

Included in the $32.8 million municipal tax levy, is the 2023 Road Dedicated Tax of $3.1 million (2022 – $3.1 million).

Council has suspended the growth portion of the one per cent road dedicated tax for 2023. The temporary suspension was seen as a necessary measure to alleviate the impacts of rising costs on the city’s tax levy.
“Along with general municipal taxes needed to provide city services to the residents of Cranbrook, we also collect taxes for other levels of government.

“Among those are: school taxes and taxes requisitioned by the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) and Kootenay East Regional Hospital District (KERHD). These additional requisitions impact the overall amount the taxpayer is required to pay,” the city explained.
