FireSmart community debris bin event coming to Edgewater

Residents in Edgewater will be receiving some support from the East Kootenay FireSmart Program in the form of a community debris bin later this month.

“The goal of the FireSmart Program is to help residents who are trying to clear their properties of combustible materials,” said Local FireSmart Representative Thomas Dobbin.

“This centrally located bin will give residents a chance to dispose of that yard waste that they would otherwise have to haul to the Columbia Valley Landfill. This is an opportunity for the community to come together to work toward the goal of becoming a more fire resilient place to live and play.”

The green bin will be in place from May 26 – June 9, to allow residents ample opportunity to drop off their yard waste.

It will be located in the empty lot southeast of the post office, on Sinclair Street.

Materials accepted include grass, needles, leaves, brush, and tree limbs measuring under eight inches in diameter. They ask that you do not include any construction materials, treated wood, or root balls.

There is no cost to drop off yard waste, but organizers do ask that residents track their work hours, as it is an important component of becoming a nationally recognized FireSmart community. To learn more about the program or how to submit hours tracked, visit engage.rdek.bc.ca/firesmart .
