Coal Miner Days organizers thanked for hosting a great event
During the week of June 5-11, the community of Sparwood hosted its annual Coal Miner Days. Of note, the night of June 10/11, RCMP report the cabaret at the Rec Centre was well attended and foot patrols were completed into the cabaret, which was appreciated by the patrons.
Elk Valley RCMP are happy to report that, despite heavy and ongoing patrols that evening, not one impaired driver was located the evening of the cabaret and officers report seeing a great deal of patrons having arranged prior rides home or walking on foot. We appreciate everyone’s assistance in making our community a safer place to live. Thank you to the organizers of Coal Miner Days for hosting such a great event!
Squatter removed from Fernie hotel property
On June 8 at 7:50 a.m., Elk Valley RCMP attended to a location in the 2000 block of Highway 3 in Fernie. The complainant and management of the location were reporting a woman had set up her tent and spread her personal belongings within a space that was designated by the property to be available for guests and other users of the hotel property. The 36-year-old Caucasian woman was also witnessed to have voided her bowels while at the location and disposing of her personal toiletries on the property in the same area. The suspect was located by police on the property and was arrested for mischief. She was later released on conditions to not go to the property in question. All her belongings were removed and she was escorted from the property by police.

Excessive speeder loses vehicle for seven days
On June 10 at 4:03 p.m., an Elk Valley RCMP officer was conducting speed laser enforcement just south of Sparwood near the Olsen rest area when he observed a blue Honda minivan with an Alberta licence plate passing a group of motorcyclists heading eastbound at a high rate of speed. The officer continued to monitor the speed of the vehicle, which he visually estimated to be travelling at 145 km/h in the 100 km zone, when he observed the van pass in the median area two other vehicles travelling eastbound. At that point, the officer locked the laser speed at 160 km/h. The vehicle was stopped, the male driver was cooperative with police. The driver was served an excessive speed ticket and the vehicle was impounded for seven days. The driver and his elderly passenger were transported to Tim Horton’s in Sparwood to await another ride. Our file is concluded.
