Summer Shuttle Pilot green lit for Fernie
By Erin Knutson
A new summer shuttle pilot project received an unanimous vote in its favour from the City of Fernie following discussion in council chambers at Tuesday’s (July 11) meeting.
Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Michael Boronowski requested that a partnership agreement between Tunnel 49 Adventures Inc. (Tunnel 49) and the city be struck to create a service that will bring the pilot summer shuttle to the public.
“It will operate similarly to the winter shuttle service,” he said.
The agreement includes changes that protect the city and taxpayers from incurring undue hardship or financial loss from expenses the municipality has traditionally absorbed.
“This creates an incentive for the operator to provide a truly sustainable service rather than relying on the city to backstop operating losses, which was a historical challenge with the Service. 9.2. 2023 Summer Shuttle Service Agreement,” said Boronowski’s report.
Council members voiced concerns over ridership and potential scheduling issues. These concerns were addressed by staff, outlining that the service delivery would be as stated in the agreement.
Creating a sustainable funding source was paramount in discussion as mayor and council moved forward with the initiative.
Following a positive review, three Micro Bird busses owned by the city for its winter shuttle service (pictured) and purchased with Resort Municipality Initiative (RMI) funding are slated for transfer to Tunnel 49, a move negotiated with the help of Tourism Fernie and Resorts of the Canadian Rockies (RCR).
“This is just a pilot, and as it moves forward, I’m sure there will be a different model – but right now, it’s a good solution to reduce the probability of losing service,” said Mayor Nic Milligan.
