Dirt biker found dead south of Sparwood
On August 12 at 10:02 p.m., Elk Valley Regional RCMP was notified by a witness that they had found a deceased man next to a dirt bike in a creek bed off the upper Flathead Forest Service Road, well south of Sparwood.
The witness met police and guided them to the scene.
“Evidence located at the scene indicate the man had been travelling alone at what was considered to be a high rate of speed and came across a washout, crashing into the stream bed,” said S/Sgt. Svend Nielsen, Elk Valley RCMP Detachment commander
The rider was also found to not be wearing a helmet.
The B.C. Coroner’s Service was notified and did not attend the scene due to the remoteness of the location. The family of the 51-yea-old man from the Kootenay area was notified of the death by RCMP.
Police continue to support the Coroner’s Office as part of their investigation.
“The wearing of safety equipment and having a buddy system in place may have made a difference in this case given the known circumstances. Elk Valley RCMP offer their condolences to the family,” S/Sgt. Nielsen said.
The investigation is ongoing.
