Significant snow forecast for Elk Valley
Did you enjoy that wee tease from spring the past week?
Well, Old Man Winter hasn’t punched out yet, with another round of snow and cooler temperatures arriving for the weekend, just in time to boost local ski resorts for the push to the end of their seasons.
Environment Canada has issued special weather statement for the Elk Valley, warning about a “significant amount of snow” arriving on Thursday in the Elk Valley (especially near Fernie).
“A low-pressure system, combined with the cold front from the Prairies, will generate a significant amount of snow over the Elk Valley on Thursday. The snow is expected to start on Thursday morning, intensifying throughout the day, and then tapering off in the late evening hours,” Environment Canada said.
Total snowfall accumulations of 10 to 15 cm are possible with localized higher amounts near Fernie.
Snow and rain is forecast for the entire region beginning March 21, with periods of snow forecast for Kootenay National Park from Thursday to Sunday (March 24).
Environment Canada has also reissued a dust advisory for Sparwood.
The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy in collaboration with the Interior Health Authority issued a Dust Advisory for Sparwood on March 17.
The advisory remains in effect due to high concentrations of coarse particulate matter that are expected to persist until there is precipitation, dust suppression or a change in traffic patterns. Levels tend to be highest around busy roads and industrial operations. This advisory is in effect until further notice.
