CFES hosting regional peers for Engine Boss training May 11
Members with Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services are playing host to a number of other firefighters and departments from across the Kootenays on Saturday, May 11, for important Engine Boss training ahead of the upcoming wildfire season.
Residents will notice a significant increase in the number of fire apparatus from other departments travelling around the community with their lights on, as they participate in this training.
Several key neighbourhoods will also see increased activity for training exercises including River Drive (see map above) at River’s Crossing (formerly Shadow Mountain), 23rd Street South at 13th Avenue South (right) (South Hill area) and in the Jim Smith Lake area (below) on Hilltop Crescent.
“The training that we will see across our community this weekend is a direct result of the need for local fire departments to work seamlessly within the provincial wildfire response system,” said Scott Driver, Director of Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services. “As a community, we only must look back to last summer to recall a time when additional resources were required to support the St. Mary’s River Wildfire response. Our
crews need to be trained to work together during fire season to keep each other safe as responders, and to increase the capacity to protect our communities.”
Crews, as part of the training exercises, will be using hydrants in these areas. As these hydrants are used, these neighbourhoods may experience periods of cloudy water. Those impacted should simply run their cold water tap until the water runs clear.
Wildfire risk reduction requires that everyone does their part. It is important to remember that being Firesmart requires participation from governments, first responders and property owners.
No single agency is going to protect everyone from wildfires. Property owners have an important role to play in protecting their home from wildfire. Taking action to FireSmart your property will dramatically decrease the risk of wildfire damaging your home. The best part is it is surprisingly easy to do.
