New planning process underway for Area A
The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) has initiated a new planning process that will review and update the Elk Valley Official Community Plan (OCP).
“It has been 10 years since the Elk Valley OCP was adopted and it is time for it to be reviewed and updated so that it reflects the community’s current vision for the future,” explained RDEK Planning Supervisor Karen Macleod.
“The planning process will include extensive public engagement and consultation and will focus on developing policies that are reflective of current community perspectives.”
The Elk Valley OCP planning process is expected to take 18 to 24 months to complete. A new project page has been created and will serve as a central hub of information throughout the project.
“I’ve heard from many residents over the past few months about the need for an updated OCP, so I am excited to see this project underway,” said RDEK Electoral Area A Director Thomas McDonald.
“As opportunities for public engagement and input come up, I encourage all residents and property owners in Area A to participate. The more participation we have, the better this plan will be.”
The first engagement opportunity is the initial public survey, which is now open and taking submissions. A link to the survey can be found on the project page, and those without a computer can complete the survey by phone or request a hard copy be sent to them.
The survey deadline is 4:30 p.m. on August 31.
The RDEK is also hoping to form an advisory committee to be involved throughout the planning process. Information on the committee and application forms are expected to be posted on the project page in the coming weeks.
