Elk Valley RCMP Report
Truck stolen from Fernie recovered the same day in Sundre
On June 8 at 2:40 p.m., a 2003 grey Ford F350 truck was reported stolen from the Aspen Crescent area in Fernie.
The owner indicated the truck was in the driveway at 11 p.m. the night before and noticed it missing at 1 p.m. the next day. All keys were accounted for by the owner.
An investigation was completed along with a video search from local CCTV cameras around the neighbourhood (still ongoing).
The truck was recovered the same day in Sundre, Alberta by the Blackfalds RCMP with some rear end damage along with a punched ignition. There was no evidence located in the vehicle that could be used to identify the suspect(s). Our complainant was updated.
The investigation is ongoing at this point, pending further development of any suspects or evidence. File 2024-1634 refers.
There was also another vehicle theft attempted in the Elk Valley area on this same date, but the person(s) involved were not successful in their attempt to remove the vehicle from its location.
Report of racing vehicles near Sparwood leads to stolen vehicle investigation
On June 8 at 5:48 p.m., a report of two racing vehicles was reported along Highway 43 near Sparwood heading southbound from the Line Creek turn off.
One of the plates, belonging to a red 1997 Dodge Ram 2500 truck, came back as being stolen earlier from Hosmer. Further information indicated the second vehicle “racing” belonged to the registered owner of the stolen pick-up.
Police began to attend the area in an attempt to locate and stop the trucks when the stolen truck was determined to be turning into the Sparwood Heights, but no description of the driver was obtained at that time.
Officers entered into the area to look for the truck, but no police pursuit had been initiated. An officer found the truck abandoned at the end of Ponderosa Drive and observed the ignition was punched out and it matched the stolen vehicle reported from Hosmer earlier the same day.
Police set up a containment area and searched for the unknown driver, but no one was located. Unfortunately, no Police Dog Service team was available at that time to attend our area to assist the ground search for the suspect.
A continuing sweep of the area around the truck found several pieces of key evidence. A local forensic examiner attended to the truck and completed an examination, locating possible evidence to identify a suspect. A bag within the truck located two other stolen plates from B.C. along with other suspected stolen property.
On June 9 at 10:02 a.m., a resident in the 1300 block of Matevic Road reported an unknown Caucasian man walking onto her property from the river area.
The owner spoke to the man, who indicated he had slept along the river and was travelling from Alberta to the B.C. Interior after sharing a ride with a stranger. RCMP attended and located the man and identified him as a possible suspect in the stolen vehicle investigation.
Police caution any owner of property stolen to not engage with the person(s) involved in any capacity in a similar situation, that your safest option is to report the location or person(s) to the police immediately and not create further safety concerns for themselves or others.
Anyone with information about these events can contact the Elk Valley Regional RMCP at 250-425-6233 to speak with an officer or report their information anonymously through BC Crime Stoppers.
Please refer to file 2024-1647, our investigation continues.
Elk Valley RCMP notes these situations are isolated involving a small group of roving suspects and feel that there will be a no further significant impact to any of our communities as a result of these events.
SAR perform superior rescue near Elko
On June 10 at 9:57 p.m., Elk Valley Regional RCMP was notified by BC Ambulance and the RDEK Fire Rescue Unit out of Jaffray that they were involved in a rescue situation south of the motorcycle track near the Elko Mill at Elko.
Three local teenagers had been hanging out near a cliff overlooking the river when one of their dogs decided to run off and jumped over the edge of the cliff. An attempt was made by the dog’s owner to rescue it, but the teenager unfortunately ended up falling 4oo-500 feet down the steep embankment.
The young man was able to stay conscious, but he possibly had a broken ankle and collarbone along with a possible concussion. Fernie Search and Rescue was activated and completed a high angle rope recovery which was successfully completed by 4:28 a.m.
RCMP assisted the other two boys by transporting them home. Once again, we are fortunate to have such a superior and dedicated group of volunteers who donate their time to help people in distressing situations, thank you to Fernie Search and Rescue.
Our file 2024-1675 refers, which is now concluded.
