The following is a synopsis of what occurred during the August 20 District of Sparwood council meeting.
BUSINESS
Council Leave Request
Council granted Councillor Sam Atwal a leave of absence from council from September 20 to October 26 to campaign for provincial MLA. In his absence, council appointed Councillor Amy Cardozo as Acting Mayor for the months of September and October 2024.
Development Variance Permit for #27-9555 Highway 43
Council has authorized staff to issue notice to affected properties of its intent to consider a development variance permit, DVP2024-006, to vary Section 4.9.2.d of the Sparwood Mobile Home Parks Bylaw No. 288, 1982, as amended, to decrease the minimum building and structure rear yard from 4.57m to 1.52m to place a new mobile home at #27-9555 Highway 43. An informal hearing has been scheduled to hear from the public on September 3, prior to consideration.
Development Variance Permit for 454 Mountain Ash Crescent
Council has authorized staff to issue notice to affected properties of its intent to consider a development variance permit, DVP2024-009, to vary Section 3.2.2.C.i and 3.2.2.D.i of Zoning Bylaw 264, 1981, as amended, to decrease the minimum building and structure side and rear yards from 1.52m to 1.02m to renovate a detached garage at 454 Mountain Ash Crescent. An informal hearing has been scheduled to hear from the public on September 3 prior to consideration.
Equipment Financing for Fire Engine
Council authorized up to $800,469.36 be borrowed, under Section 175 of the Community Charter, from the Municipal Finance Authority, for the purpose of purchasing the Fire Engine. The loan must be repaid within five years, with no rights of renewal. The new fire engine push-in ceremony was held in conjunction with the wildfire preparedness day free BBQ on Tuesday, August 27 at Fire Hall #1 (479 Pine Avenue).

Permissive Tax Exemption Application: Sparwood Food Bank
The Sparwood Food Bank purchased 114 Centennial Street, roll number 337-03043.000, Lot 43, Plan Number NEP7006, for the purposes of offering a community food bank, food sharing program and Toys for Tots, within the District of Sparwood. The Sparwood Food Bank submitted a complete application to the Director of Finance for a permissive tax exemption on August 14.
The Committee directed Staff to include the Sparwood Food Bank on the new Permissive Tax Exemption bylaw that will be coming to Council before October 31.
