Sparwood Council Facts

The following is a synopsis of what occurred during the Oct. 15 District of Sparwood council meeting.

INFORMAL PUBLIC HEARING

Development Variance Permit for 149 Pine Avenue

An Informal Public Hearing was held to hear community feedback regarding a development variance permit to vary Section 3.2.2.B.i of Zoning Bylaw No. 264, 1981 as amended, to decrease the minimum front yard requirement of 7.62m to 6.09m, to construct a new attached deck at 149 Pine Avenue. The development variance permit was later issued by council at the regular meeting.

BYLAWS

Street Naming Bylaw

Council gave first three readings to Street Naming Bylaw No. 1339, 2024. The district regulates the naming of streets through a street naming bylaw. The subdivision of the Westwood Heights neighbourhood will create four new roads which require naming. The developer has proposed the names Westwood Heights Drive, Elder Drive, Lilac Street and Wild Rose Street. This will start a new naming convention for the area as plants.

BUSINESS

Community Hall roof replacement – contract awarded

Council has authorized Mayor and Corporate Officer to execute a contract with C&H Roofing for the replacement of the Community Hall roof for $245,949 and approve an additional $44,750 for roofing inspection, removal of wet or damaged decking and contingency for a total of $290,699.

Permissive Tax Exemption Policy

The deadline for new Permissive Tax Exemption applications has been updated to June 30 every year. This will allow for at least one month for discussion with organizations to correct or complete their application in the event that the submissions were incomplete. By changing the date to June 30, staff will review applications and present the bylaw to council by mid July. Public notice can be provided in August, and the bylaw can be adopted in September/October. This will allow sufficient time to meet the statutory deadline of October 31.

OTHER

Bears and Our Community

It is that time of year to start thinking about picking your fruit trees, cleaning up all the fallen fruit, and removing other bear attractants (BBQs, bird feeders, pet food, etc.). The bears have started coming into the community looking for easy food sources to bulk up before hibernation. It is a bylaw offence to place garbage out on the curb before 5 a.m. on collection day. Remember to unclip the bear-resistant locks after placing the cart at the curb. Excess garbage should be taken to the Transfer Station which is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week (excluding statutory holidays). Remember that a fed bear is a dead bear.
