March in the East Kootenay ‘13

March is the month when optimism for the future begins to peak with most Canadians.

Beasts converted to accepting the sufferance of winter, we drop our chins each November and march stoically forward, biting back occasionally at the pinch and frosted ire of winter, burying our minds in hockey, arts, the bounties of the sprawling boundaries of our lands and the general preservation of existence.

Come March, we fling aside the undershirts of February and feel the expanding warmth arriving with the longer hours of light. We know better days lie ahead; days of green and blue and gentle nature perfumed evenings; days that span into the night where the sun’s final hold is but a murmur of time before the moon and stars take control.

March brings the promise found in greater opportunity. For photographers, the month allows for a greater range of shooting opportunities, with longer and juicier light and nature transitioning from the valley floors to mountain benches.

As this month’s collection of images showcasing the passage of the 31 days of March in the East Kootenay show, March gives you a bit of everything.

As author Richard Lawson Gales suggested, “March comes in with an adder’s head, and goes out with a peacock’s tail.” And that it did this year.

This month’s images were captured in the following locations: Aqam; Aqisknuk First Nation; Bull River Ranch; Canal Flats; Cranbrook; Elkford; Elko; Fairmont Hot Springs; Fernie; Kimberley; Koocanusa area; Kootenay National Park/Radium Hot Springs; Moyie; Sparwood; Wasa; Windermere. There is also a series of images from the annual Griz Days fun in Fernie at the beginning of the month.

Just because we like the images, we’ve included a couple of items from a ramble over to the West Kootenay. They include a shot of the Kootenay River upstream from Castlegar; approaching Kootenay Bay ferry terminal; graffiti in Nelson; and a cheap trailer for sale near Castlegar.

Wasa’s Krista Nebloch has once again provided some lovely images showcasing her take on our feature month. This month she has captured the following images, as she describes: “Cameron Pond melting; Big sky Wasa; First stink bug on my window; Sparkly water St. Mary’s River; St Mary’s river mouth and lake; St Mary’s River bottom; Wasa Lake melting; My skis on Kimberley ski hill; Wasa Slough/bird sanctuary (have no idea how I got my glasses reflecting in there but it looked cool! And there are white swans in flight but you have to look hard to see them!); Wasa Slough/bird sanctuary and breeding ground for the white swans; Woodpecker in tree; Stripped blue sky; Ukrainian Easter Eggs; Wasa Shooting into the sun…I know, so wrong but it looked neat; Wasa road looking south towards Cranbrook; Lake ice melting crystals; Kewl thing on the Rob’s door Kimberley; St. Mary’s Valley… Bluebird day! And in case you ever wondered who I am…this is me on skis ‘rockin’ the hill for the last night ski of the season! My friend took it…first pic of me on skis ever!”

Krista’s photos begin with ‘kn’. Each photo’s name (slug) will appear if you hover your curser over it.

This month’s lead photo of Easter Eggs is by Krista.

With that – have a great April!
