Cranbrook and Kimberley RCMP officers, armed with a couple of “ringers” from Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services, faced off against the Kootenay ICE in a good old fashioned game of ball hockey Friday afternoon.

Funds from the sale of concession items and donations were split between the RCMP and ICE for chosen causes.

The RCMP were playing for a fellow officer currently undergoing chemo treatment for leukemia. To support him several officers and support staff from both Cranbrook and Kimberley RCMP detachments will have their head shaved or ‘go blonde’ and the outcome of the game meant hair salvation for some.

Soon-to-be-retired from the force Cpl. Pat Prefontaine explained during a City of Cranbrook council quarterly report that his newly dyed look was his choice of the two, noting “I know what my head looks like.”

While much of the play tilted in the Mounties’ end, with the likes of potential first overall NHL 2014 draft choice Sam Reinhart leading the charge against them, the officers held their own on the scoresheet.

The charity supported by the ICE is ‘Believe in the Gold,’ which supports families affected by childhood cancer, increases awareness of childhood cancers and raises funds for research into the disease that affects one in every 400 kids.
