Six officers go bald after ball hockey tilt

On November 29, the Cranbrook/Kimberley RCMP played the Kootenay ICE in ball hockey and then went bald.

Local officers challenged the ICE to a friendly ball hockey game.

The game, in front of a predominantly pro-police crowd took place at Western Financial Place was close, but the younger ICE players managed to edge by the RCMP officers with a score of 20-18.

A penalty shot was awarded to Sam Reinhart after retired RCMP member Gerry Smith pushed him. But fortunately for the police Reinhart missed.

Hot dogs, coffee and hot chocolate was served during the game and monies raised went to the ICE charity; Believe in the Gold.

Right after the game six police officers, along with one support staff member shaved their heads.

Cpl. Pat Prefontaine chose to go blonde. The shave off was in support of a Cranbrook RCMP member who is currently undergoing chemo treatment for cancer. Participating members and staff have been collecting pledges for the past month. Funds raised by the shave off will go to assist the family financially to ease the burden of the increased costs for treatment and travel.

RCMP would like to thank Sandor Rentals, A & W, Cranbrook Street Liquor Store, Bridge Interiors (Ken Bridge), Tim Hortons, the Kootenay ICE and the City of Cranbrook for their support and contributions. Hair dressers were, Jesse Robertson (Shure Cut), Kaitlyn Smith (Urban Roots) and Bruce Kirchhofer (Hilltop Hair by Bruce).

The Kootenay ICE Charity; Believe in the Gold supports families affected by childhood cancer, increases awareness of childhood cancers and raises funds for research into the disease that affects one in every 400 kids.

Both the RCMP and Kootenay ICE recognize that cancer affects everyone – the young and old, the rich and poor, men, women and children – and represents a tremendous burden on patients and their families.
