RDEK Board Highlights
Library grants approved
The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Board of Directors March 7 approved 2014 Library Grants for the Invermere and Radium Public Libraries. The Invermere Public Library will receive a grant in the amount of $80,000, while the Radium Hot Springs Public Library will receive $14,400.
Elko Septage Ponds to be closed
The Elko septage receiving facility will be closed as of April 1. All contractors currently using the Elko site will be directed to the facility in Wasa.
Elk Valley waste disposal location to be part of Solid Waste Management Plan review
The directors for the Central Subregion March 7 agreed in principle to staff exploring the possibility of allowing the Elk Valley’s solid waste to be brought to the Central Subregion Landfill for disposal as part of the Solid Waste Management Plan (SWMP) review process. The Elk Valley directors will review the Central Services Committee proposal next month. The SWMP review will be held in summer/fall 2014 and, if the Elk Valley directors support the proposal, this item would be one aspect of the review process. The process will include the establishment of a Technical Review Committee, use of our Plan Monitoring Advisory Committee and public consultation. The decision by the Central Directors only gives staff the direction to include it as an option to explore further. Currently, the Elk Valley sends its waste to Alberta for disposal.
Committee and Board of Variance appointments
The board made the annual appointments for the Advisory Planning Commissions (APC) / Electoral Area Advisory Commissions (EAAC). Each electoral area has a citizen-based APC/EAAC that considers and makes recommendations of applications such as Discretionary Grant-In-Aid and development applications for variances and rezoning. Members were also appointed to the Agricultural Advisory Committee (AAC) for a one-year term.
Diana Cavers (Central Subregion) and Cheryl Otting (Elk Valley Subregion) were appointed for a three year term on the Board of Variance.
