Chamber seeking new Executive Director
The Cranbrook and District Chamber of Commerce (Chamber) is looking for a new Executive Director (ED) to replace outgoing long-time ED Karin Penner who is retiring.
The chamber mission is to foster a healthy business climate in Cranbrook & District, and its vision is to be a valued and respected champion of business and a positive contributor to our community.
The ED is the full-time primary executive and operating officer of the Chamber. The ED is fully responsible and accountable to the Chamberâs Board of Directors (the Board) for all operations of the Chamber, and for operating within Board-approved strategies, policies, communication/marketing directions, business/financial, human resources, planning, asset management and budgetary plans, explained Chamber President Dave Butler.
The Cranbrook and District Chamber of Commerce currently has a working board. While the Board is accountable to the membership, it currently assists the ED and staff in setting policies, procedures and strategic direction and in undertaking specific initiatives. The ED is ultimately responsible for all operations and is accountable to the Board. However, it is the goal of the current Chamber Board to begin a shift toward a policy (or governance) Board.
The ED reports solely and only to the Board. The Board of Directors is responsible to the membership. The Chamber By-law Article 9 states that âthe Board may appoint a Manager, and set the remuneration and terms and conditions of employment of that person.â
Notwithstanding this, however, in urgent matters occurring between Board meetings, the ED may take direction, on the Boardâs behalf, from the Executive, as represented by the President. If any conflicts, perceived or otherwise, exist in any such direction, the Boardâs direction will always take precedence.
The President is the duly recognized and appointed designated spokesperson of both the Board and the Executive in matters relating to the ED. The ED should rely on the President to provide any clarification and guidance of Boardâs and/or Executiveâs direction on any matter, if such is required.
