SD5 board asks sides to go to binding arbitration

The School Board of Trustees for School District No. 5 (SD5) has sent a letter to the provincial government and BC Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) asking them to enter into binding arbitration to help settle the ongoing teachers’ strike.

The board Sept. 9 agreed to have a joint letter sent to the Education Minister Peter Fassbender, and BCTF President Jim Iker, “urging the parties to immediately enter into binding arbitration through the process of a three-person arbitration panel to resolve the BC Public School Contract dispute, and to copy this letter to our education partners and to media.”

The letter reflects the mood of the province’s teachers, with union members Sept. 10 voting 99.4% to seek binding arbitration

A total of 41,000 teachers have been on strike in the province since June 17, with half a million students out of class.
