Deals a-plenty expected for Black Friday

Cranbrook and area shoppers – take note. The annual Black Friday shopping extravaganza is being held this Friday (Nov. 21).

The Cranbrook and District Chamber of Commerce initiative was first organized in 2011 to encourage consumers to shop locally.

blackfriday“Our committee recognizes that consumers travel out of our area to find selection and value and they are well aware of the U.S. Black Friday craze that has become the biggest retail day of the year in the U.S. By having our event a week early, we give consumers the chance to shop and spend locally. Our hope is that they find great service, selection and value right here in Cranbrook,” the chamber of commerce explains.

Another reason this event is a week early is due to the JCI Kootenay Santa Claus Parade which is always the last Friday of November and the same day as the US Black Friday.

The chamber is not only encouraging shoppers to hit local stores this Friday (and always) but also urging business owners to become involved and provide ‘can’t miss’ deals for consumers. They are also urging business owners to consider expanding their specials beyond Black Friday and to consider holding events and draws in their establishments to provide the almost carnival-like atmosphere that has been evident in the past few years.

“The more you have going on, the wider the appeal. We can take away the temptation of cross border shopping by having as good or better deals here in Cranbrook,” the chamber stated in a letter to members.

Chamber vice-president David Struthers urged members and residents to help make Black Friday a big day for consumers in the city during the Nov. 19 chamber luncheon at the Heritage Inn.

“We want to encourage you to get out and support local businesses,” he said.

In related chamber news, it was reported at today’s luncheon that the Awesome Auction, planned for Nov. 22, has been cancelled due to poor ticket sales.

Items donated for that event’s silent auction will be up for grabs during the chamber’s Christmas luncheon (Dec. 10).
