George Alan Wood

George Alan Wood, 69, passed away peacefully on August 29, 2023, in Kimberley, BC. He was born on March 16, 1954, in Cranbrook, BC, to Franklin and Olga Wood.

George was a beloved son, brother, uncle, and dear friend to everyone he met. He had a heart of gold and would stop everything to give advice or lend a helping hand. George’s dedication to his community was evident through his active involvement in various organizations. He volunteered for sled dog races, BC winter games, and citizen on patrol, making a lasting impact on the community he loved.

George’s career began at Parks Hardware, where he worked alongside his father and uncle. Later, he joined Bavarian Hardware as a world-class clerk. In 1985, George took a leap of faith and bought Bavarian Sports and Hardware with his business partners and best friends, Barrie and Judy Peterson. George, Barrie, and Judy owned and worked at Bavarian Hardware until 2010 when they sold the business. However, George couldn’t stay away and continued working at the store, cherishing the opportunity to see and serve the loyal residents of Bavarian Hardware.

Beyond his professional life, George had a wide range of hobbies and interests. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, skiing, and teaching many family kids how to ski. Hockey, golf, camping, and hiking with his beloved companions, Pal and Mocha who brought him immense joy. George also cherished hunting trips with his dear friend Jack.

George will be deeply missed by his sister, Diane Matchett, 3 nephews Darrell (Lisa) Matchett, Eldon Jr. (Merla) Matchett, Steven Wood,  niece Kari (Steve) Pidskalny, great-nieces Syd, and Ashley-Lynn (Caleb) Pidskalny, Mia Matchett, great-nephew  Austin Pidskalny, as well as Judy Peterson, Jack Smith, and many extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Franklin and Olga Wood, brother Gary Wood, brother-in-law Eldon Matchett, and business partner and best friend Barrie Peterson.

A Celebration of George’s life will be held on September 18, 2023, at The Centennial Hall in Kimberley, BC, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. Please come prepared with your cherished stories of George as his loved ones would like to hear them all.

George’s warm smile, caring nature, and unwavering dedication to his community and loved ones will forever be remembered. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
