Obituary of Jim (James) Russell Andrews

Jim (James) Russell Andrews

Jim faced his cancer diagnosis as he lived his entire life – with strength, dignity and courage.  He passed away peacefully in Cranbrook Hospital on March 4, 2025 surrounded by the love of family and friends.

Born in Weyburn, Saskatchewan June 4, 1942 Jim grew up on the same farm that his mother did.  Eighteen months later Brian arrived to complete the family and to encourage Jim to be more mischievous.

Travelling by horse, Jim attended a one room school for grades 1-8, then he bussed into Weyburn Collegiate for High School.  There curling became Jim’s sport of choice, reaching SK provincial finals one year. After high school Jim attended the University of Saskatchewan where he earned a Bachelor of Engineering Science (Physics) 1964 with distinction, Master of Science (Physics) 1967 and a Bachelor of Education 1967 with distinction.

In 1966 he married the love of his life, Carol Reid.  They moved to Fort St John, BC in 1968 where Jim enjoyed a career teaching math and physics in the local high school. Marc arrived in 1970 and Dawn in 1972.  Jim always delighted in teaching children and grandchildren anything physics, math or geology related.  Jim’s entertainment in the early 1980s was to learn to fly a glider.  Carol was never happy with this! Family outings included many camping trips in a camper Jim build for the back of the truck.  Except for one winter camping outing, camping produced many good memories.

1999 saw Jim and Carol both retired and moved to Marysville.  Jim was involved in community and church work everywhere he lived.  The railway and curling club attracted his interest in Kimberley.

Through the years Jim enjoyed fishing, biking, sailing, camping, woodworking, skiing, travelling the world and visiting family and friends.

Jim is predeceased by his parents Preston and Elva Andrews and his brother Brian.

Carol, Marc (Cheryl), Dawn (Brian Sieben) and four grand children: Janelle, Andy, Kera, and Keleah miss his presence beyond what any words can express.  Also mourning are his sisters-in-law: Lesley Parkin, Nancy Reid, Jackie (Kelly) Laurans); brothers-in-law: Bill (Raylene) Reid, Ted Giesbrecht, Elwood Smith; many cousins, nieces, nephews and fantastic friends.

The family extends its grateful appreciation for Jim’s care to Dr. R. Nash, Dr. K. Lowden, the Cranbrook oncology unit, and the palliative care unit.  You make a difference.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Kimberley Shared Ministry or the charity of your choice.

A Memorial Service will be held on April 5, 2025 at 2 PM at Kimberley Shared Ministries, Please wear bright colours.
