Dancing like butterflies above the Platzl

On Thursday evening, August 7, as the Kimberley Farmersā€™ Market closes on Howard Street, the Kimberley Community Band will strike up in the Platzl in front of the Spirit Rock Climbing Centre and a unique evening of band music and vertical dancing will begin.

Dancer and choreographer Trina Rasmusen will bring new choreography to a vertical dance performance on the outer wall of the climbing centre where she and some of her dance students will perform a series of vertical vignettes, dancing like butterflies above the Platzl, interspersed with concert band pieces from the musicians below, together providing an hour-long performance of music and dance never seen before from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. (approximately).

This is the fifth event in the eight-day Kimberley Kaleidoscope arts and culture festival that runs from August 2 to August 9, incorporating the First Saturday celebration of arts, culture andĀ heritage.

On August 2, a family Picnic in the Park at Rotary Park with music and magic and childrenā€™s games on August 3, The Cromoli Brothers present Hello Kimberley!

On August 4, a Painting Demo with wine & cheese on August 5, Wandering Wordsmythes poetry, prose, and music on August 6, the Vertical Dance concert on August 7, the 10th annual Arts on the Edge Gala Opening reception on August 8, and the traditional Arts on the Edge arts festival on August 9, concluding with an outdoor concert at Centre 64 by Calgary bluesman Donald Ray Johnson and his band.

Attendance at the vertical dance concert in the Platzl on August 7 is, of course, free with donations being gratefully accepted. The event is sponsored in part by Columbia Basin Trust.
