You Be The Jury interactive Law Week fun
The local Bar association is hosting an interactive event for Law Week April 14 at Key City Theatre.
Law Week is a national event held annually in April celebrating the signing of Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
The event, called ‘You Be The Jury,’ is a free public awareness presentation of a criminal jury trial.
Mr. Justice Rico Strahl will preside. The charge is murder. The accused is Karen Goodman. She is charged with murdering her husband, John Goodman. He was found in his car outside their house, shot in the head. A block away, a pistol with Judy’s prints was found. On his cell phone, a message sent about an hour before his body was found was a message from Karen’s number, “I’ll kill you, you jerk!” Karen will testify that she didn’t do it. There will be a witness to say that she was with him at a local motel the night of the murder.
Members of the audience have the opportunity to be jurors. Actors are volunteers from the court registry staff, a couple of real sheriffs and local lawyers who play the parts of Judge, Crown counsel, Defence and witnesses.
This year, there will be a few “special members of the Jury. Members of the audience will have the opportunity to sit on the Jury as well.
The Jury will be sitting “front and centre” of the audience, who will be given the very unusual opportunity to see and hear the Jury deliberations.
You Be The Jury starts at 7 p.m. at Key City Theatre on Tuesday evening.
