V-Day comes to Cranbrook at Key City Theatre
February 15 performance of The Vagina Monologues
Cranbrookâs V-Day celebration comes to Key City Theatre just in time for Valentineâs weekend, Friday, February 15. The show starts at 8 p.m., and there will be live music in the lobby starting at 7 p.m.
The ladies on stage will bring the house down with passion, purpose and the powerful words of Eve Enslerâs The Vagina Monologues.
Tanya Laing Gahr is once again taking on directorial duties of the play. Sheâs bringing in a cast of more than 15 women representing diverse backgrounds and experiences.
âYouâll walk out of this event feeling energized,â Laing Gahr said. âThe excitement, the performers and the message are going to combine into an evening that inspires, provokes and entertains.â
The performance will be the second that Laing Gahr and producer Susan Hanson have done as a fundraiser for the Cranbrook Womenâs Resource Centre. Their production last year raised nearly $8,000 for the centre, which has been serving women in Cranbrook for 41 years.
âThe Cranbrook Womenâs Resource Centre helps hundreds of womenâand their childrenâevery year,â Laing Gahr said. âOur theatre company, Drama Queens, has chosen to support the resource centre because we believe in the work it doesâand we believe in the women who use it.â
The Cranbrook Womenâs Resource Centre is one of the last centres of its kind in the province. Government funding cuts have led to centres shutting down, and the Cranbrook centre was shut down for several months during 2011.
This year, the overall fundraising goal for the centre is $50,000.
The Friends of the Womenâs Centre are working on several projects to raise funds, but The Vagina Monologues has a special place.
âThe Vagina Monologues is part of V-Day, a global movement to end violence against women and girls,â Laing Gahr said. âCranbrookâs resource centre is the first stop for many women who are experiencing violence and are choosing to get the support they need to move on.â
Tickets are now on sale at the Key City Theatre Box Office. They are $25. All of the proceeds will go to the Cranbrook Womenâs Resource Centre.

âI canât wait to hear how the crowd responds to the performance,â Laing Gahr said. âItâs hard to describe how much energy there is in the room during The Vagina Monologues. You really have to be there.â
